Épernay

Any trip to Épernay must include the world-famous Avenue de Champagne. It has been labeled the most expensive street in the world for its magnificent champagne houses and the millions of bottles of champagne stored in the miles of cellars beneath. The cellars and the above-ground part of the avenue were both inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015. There are several major champagne brands that freely welcome visitors for a tasting at their leisure

You will also find Château Perrier, which served as army headquarters in World War II, first for the British Army (1940), then for the Germans (1942-1944) then for the Americans in 1945. This architectural gem houses a museum that details the history of the Champagne region and the formation of its soil from many millions of years ago until today. Épernay is easily accessible. It is only 5 minuntes away by car, train or bus from Ay, and 10-15 by bicycle.
